2024/10/09 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2024: Estoril Round / Preview

Signs are good for a comeback

Six weeks after his training accident with a mountain bike, Dominique Aegerter hopes to return to race action this weekend in Estoril (Portugal).

Yesterday, Tuesday, Dominique Aegerter received the green light from his attending physician Dr. Stefan Joss, whereupon he immediately packed his bags and headed to Lisbon, where the second-last round of the current FIM Superbike World Championship will be held at the Circuito do Estoril, not far from the Portuguese capital.

Aegerter suffered a complicated injury to his right shoulder and several broken ribs in a training accident in Carinthia at the end of August. His recovery is now that far advanced that he is confident that he will be able to make a comeback. However, the race doctors have the final say, and Aegerter must see them on Thursday.

The Superbike World Championship can be seen on ServusTV on Saturday and Sunday. The recording starts at 16:00 CEST on both days. Live broadcasts will be available on the digital platforms «ServusTV Online» or the paid live stream on the official WorldSBK website.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

«I am happy that I finally can make my comeback, or at least that I am ready to test my physical fitness on my race bike. My doctor in Switzerland has given me the green light after the healing process made good progress. From his point of view, everything is in the green zone. The last six weeks have felt like an eternity for me after I injured myself on a mountain bike. The first two weeks in particular were hard to bear, as I was in a lot of pain and could hardly move. I am all the happier now that I can move my arm again, brush my teeth by my own and dress myself. I certainly will not be 100 percent fit this weekend and next because I still lack strength and endurance in my right shoulder. I also still have slight pain in my shoulder and ribs. It remains to be seen what the race doctors have to say about my condition. But I would be very happy if I could return to my GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team this weekend. I have missed them and my Yamaha Superbike very much.»

«After this long time, I really want to get the feeling back for my bike. I am also looking forward to Estoril, where I really like the track. I think it is great that Estoril is back on the calendar, at least this year. One lap is very varied with some hard braking points, fast and flowing sections and a tricky chicane. So, I am looking forward to getting back on my bike. But we will not know until Thursday lunchtime whether it will actually work out this weekend, because the race doctors are notoriously strict. If I do not get the clearance, I will support my team and do everything I can to make it work next week in Jerez. Finally, I would like to thank my family, because they have helped me an incredible amount in this difficult situation. I would also like to thank Dr. Stefan Joss, my team, the sponsors and all the fans who have always been behind me. I think I also have to thank myself a little, because I always did everything I could to recover as quickly as possible so that I could come back as soon as possible, even with an injury like this.»
